The million dollar question: How many kitchen gadgets, tools and appliances does one really need? Some people collect kitchen gadgets; others can get by with a paring knife, a spatula and a frying pan. No one’s judging because there really is no right or wrong nor rhyme or reason. Friends are surprised when they come into my kitchen. I’m a professional chef but my kitchen is not as well-equipped as some people might think. I don’t have all the gadgets and tools that make every single job easier and I certainly don’t have all of the latest appliances in the season’s hottest colors.

Did You Know This About Your Weight?
Weight Loss Success15 May 2013 | 4:07 amDid You Know This About Your Weight? Did you know… That just about everyone can lose weight if they choose to. That you increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke if you are overweight. That losing weight is not as hard, as most people want to make it. That having a heart attack will take more of your time than exercising will. That having knee problems because of your weight is more painful than not having seconds at dinner. That losing weight is about balance. That just talking about losing weight does not make it happen. That walking to the pantry does not burn off eating a bag of… -
Are You Ready To Lose Weight? Let’s Get Going.
Weight Loss Success17 May 2013 | 4:36 amReady to Lose Weight A lot of people tell me that they are ready to lose weight. They tell me that they are going to do it. They tell me that nothing can stop them. However, they don’t lose weight, and they don’t even start. They are all talk and no action. They are all words and no work. When I question them later, all they have are excuses. Are you one of these people? When I was in the weight-loss process, I told very few people. Losing weight was personal for me. I wanted to show people by my results not my words. I thought it was more important that I was more action than… -
Cleaning Out Your Fridge Shouldn’t be Just a Spring Thing!
Ask Florine12 Mar 2013 | 9:44 amA refrigerator can say a lot about a person. I don’t go and check on other people’s refrigerator intentionally but sometimes I just happen to get a glance inside. At times I’ve been horrified with the chaos inside, I ask myself, “How do these people live? What are they eating? How are they still alive?” Yeah, I’m a little obsessive (and judgmental) about food storage and safety. But the reality is, we all have to be. For this very reason, I selected a medium-size refrigerator for my home. For a lot of you, it may even be considered small. (No, it’s not dorm size!) I… -

Tuesday Beach Chat for 05/21
20 May 2013 | 10:34 pmGood morning, ladies!!! Whew, what a whirlwind weekend!!! Thanks for all the sweet comments on my picture from the wedding. It's nice playing dress up every once in a while. :) The bride was absolutely gorgeous!!! I saw her and her new husband off Sunday before they left out for their honeymoon in Costa Rica. Spent Monday taking my friend, Jersey, to the airport so she could head home. Sad to see her go, but I'm glad I have gotten a chance to see her twice in the past 2 months. Came home w/ a massive migraine, so I spent about 6 hours sleeping it off w/ the help of some migraine meds. -
Bouncing while running....how do I stop?!
20 May 2013 | 9:30 pmI know at least some of you read the topic title and assumed this was a problem with "the girls". Unfortunately, it isn't. Because at least if that was the case, I'd have a few ideas on how to stop it! But no...the bouncing is happening with my whole friggin' body! In other words: when I run, I find that I am actually having quite a bit of vertical movement. I'm literally bouncing up and down as I run, and I *think* that's what's causing the after-effects I've been having (pain/discomfort in my lower legs.) I can only imagine what kind of shock it is on my poor legs, having to… -
Overate and I feel such horrible guilt now!!
20 May 2013 | 8:22 pmOh no, this is one of THOSE nights again! I went over my WW points by a lot. About 20 points. When this happens, not too often but it does, I feel such overwhelming guilt!! And I get so hard on myself, it makes me want to give up on the whole weight loss plan. It's like a voice in my head is telling me : see I knew you couldn't do it anyway and here is the proof. How do stop that voice? How do I start with a clean slate tomorrow and just accept that I will sometimes make mistakes along the way. Basically, how do I get out of my own head?? Ugh :dizzy: -
breakfast ideas?
20 May 2013 | 8:07 pmHi! I am looking for some healthy and simple breakfast ideas. I have food allergies: corn, soy, sesame, tomato, legumes and nuts, ugh, so frustrating. Anyways, I am not really an egg fan, but what I have been doing is having yogurt and fruit in the mornings, although I am getting a bit tired of it. I impulsively eat, and by that I mean, I trek up to Starbucks or the bagel shop at the wee hours of morning to get something unhealthy sometimes, even though it is just the crack of dawn. I think if I had something more appetizing at home, I wouldn't feel the need to do that, or at least not as…

He continued to eat lots of junk food and did not exercise. It was only when he turned 25 and got a serious health scare that he decided to change his lifestyle. Three Key Healthy Foods to Eat More of..
17 Sep 2012 | 5:17 pmIn this quick and to-the-point video the beautiful nutritionist suggests we eat some of these three incredibly healthy foods each day. They are leafy greens, sea vegetables and flaxseeds. Have you had some of at least one of these foods today? I had some steamed spinach with my scrambled eggs this morning, but this video reminded me that I need to stock up on some dried seaweed (my son loves it and it makes a great school lunch snack). -

New Plan, More Produce
10 May 2013 | 1:42 pmA few days ago, I sent an email to two of the dietitians at Medifast asking for help with my plan. I have been following the Medifast 5&1 Plan for a couple of months, but have not been losing much weight... 2 or 3 pounds a month. Now, that's okay, it is better than no losses, but honestly it is a pretty strict plan and I had a relapse last week that's been hard to recover from. My carbs are too high, I crave more produce which my doctor recommended to me, and I start to resent not being able to eat more veggies and some fruit over the months I've been on this plan. Considering those… -
Carb Frustration
8 May 2013 | 9:48 pmMy eating is still off. I am not eating any junk (candy, bakery stuff, no more pizza or chips) but it seems whenever I let my carbs go really high like I did a few days ago, it is hard for me to get them back down. I crave carbs. In fact, yesterday I was having some nostalgia as I ponder the comments recently left for me, and I started longing for a simple bowl of steel cut oatmeal with walnuts and berries in it. I was rationalizing to myself about how healthy this would be and made myself 1 serving (1/4 c dry) oatmeal with 2 Tbsp nuts, 1/3 cup of blueberries, some Stevia drops and 1/4… -
Appointments Galore
7 May 2013 | 12:33 pmThis past month I have been utterly swamped with appointments! It's not going to end anytime soon, either. Dentist: my kids and I all go twice a year. Two of the kids had their checkups this month; one son, who has very thin enamel, has to go back for a filling soon and needs to see an orthodontist for possible braces. I went in myself today for a checkup and cleaning and was told my gums look inflamed. I am not sure what might be causing that, but they recommended upping my flossing to twice a day. Maybe I am not getting enough vitamin C. I also have an old (old!! from when I was 13) filling… -
Relapse
4 May 2013 | 9:28 pmI felt it coming over the last couple of days... the dissatisfaction with my slow losses, the irritation at my body for not reflecting my efforts. After many weeks of Medifast, sticking to my plan, counting calories and carbs for 5 or 6 weeks straight without screwing up, I felt my taste buds and cravings perk back up when I ate that first off plan meal last week... a salad with grilled chicken but with the high fat, high salt toppings of crisp bacon and salty cheese. Those intense flavors awakened something in me and I wanted more. I sensed the grumblings within when I went to a couple of… -
May 1, Ruminating
1 May 2013 | 12:51 pmIt's May 1 and today I weighed in at 208 pounds. That's two pounds gone in April. Looking back, I've been losing slowly but haven't had any gains since October: 221 October 219 November (-2) 218 December (-1) 218 January 2013 (0) 216 February (-2) 213 March (-3) 210 April (-3) 208 May (-2) Yep, 13 pounds in 7 months. Ten pounds so far this year. I sort of accepted the slow losses, or at least I thought I had. I figured eventually my body will catch up and show me a bigger loss. And if not, hey, at least I am losing weight again. My body is changing and I look better and feel better. I weigh…

Well, guys, I'm injured again---this time with a tiny stress fracture in my foot. But---and this is a big but---I'm not freaking out about it or letting it get me down. Seriously! Walking in Bologna – 2013
13 May 2013 | 6:50 amI’m just back from the Up & Running retreat in Bologna. Good times, great gelato! One of the highlights was the Julia Jones Running Festival 6K race on the last day… I confess I’d been too obsessed with the chatting, the goodie bags and the pre-race banana supply for our runners to really think about the race part of our retreat weekend. This was great, as I had no nerves or expectations at when we arrived at Piazza Maggiore. I was just thinking about what flavour of gelato to choose afterwards! Team Up & Running! Curse of the Phoenix
7 May 2013 | 8:10 amDay 49 I’d really meant to write those words! But first… … I had to catch the bus to Edinburgh. Rhiannon and I were the only ones on board without silver hair. But we’ve always thought like silver-haired people: get to town early and beat the crowds. … then we needed breakfast. We went to our old neighbourhood from the backpacking days. The deli where we’d discovered Cream O Galloway ice cream had turned into a Sainsburys. The Wok 2000 takeaway was gone, which is a shame because instead of sounding outdated as it had in 2003, it’d be retrotastic now. -

Spuggies, skelfs and skives: 10 years in Scotland
28 Mar 2013 | 5:49 amTen years ago today my sister and and I arrived in Edinburgh. My first week was spent whinging about the £1 = $2.60 exchange rate*, drooling over men in kilts on Princes Street (sadly not a regular occurrence; just rugby fans), grumbling about the snoring dude in the youth hostel, searching for work and accommodation, swooning at the sun setting over the Castle, and generally believing I could control the shape of my two-year stay through meticulous planning and to do lists. I’d hoped to write some profound reflections on this unexpectedly long Scotland stay but looking back through…

I'm traveling for work - driving to Cincinnati - and gone from Saturday - Wednesday. This will be my 2nd time traveling since surgery. It's a little tricky with food but totally doable. 6 May 2013 | 8:50 amWeekend wrap up-------------------------------As promised, it rained ALL weekend. Oh wait - the sun did come out long enough for us to clean up the yard and set the outdoor table for a dinner party - then it rained again.I kept myself busy by going to support group, clothes shopping on Saturday and cooking Cinco de Mayo dinner all day Sunday. 2013 Capitol Peak 55K Race Report
30 Apr 2013 | 11:58 pmThis past weekend, the boys from Corvallis and I headed out for our 2nd running adventure of 2013. We piled into the minivan and took a little trip up to Olympia, WA to run the Capitol Peak Ultras. Frank, Sander, and Dennis were running the 50 mile race, while I chose to run the JV version of 55K. It was a fun filled weekend with great conversation by the campfire, beautiful views on spectacular trails, and lots of PRs to boot! I had a lot to think about coming in to this race. Capitol Peak was to be my first attempt at 55K, so a PR was a given. But, it’s the hilliest course I’ve… -
100 Mile Club—Take 2
26 Apr 2013 | 10:45 amI had such a great time last year doing the 100 mile club at Rosedale Elementary School that I decided to set up another club this year at Sumpter Elementary. I thought last year went really well after we worked out the kinks and got the kids running. But this year has been going even better. We got the kids started about a month earlier and since Sumpter is about 3 times as big as Rosedale, we’ve got over 70 kids signed up (and a couple of parents as well) to make a run at 100 miles during the school year. Here are some stats so far: # of 25 milers: 13 # of 50 milers: 12 # of 75… -
Lovin’ My Crazy Life
15 Apr 2013 | 12:53 pmMan the Smiths have been busy these last few months. It’s been go, go, go around here and I’ve been loving it. Pam recently wrote about our 6 whirlwind weeks of travelling (for fun and business and racing) and about running an ultra with our 8 year old daughter, Megan…sounds crazy I know, but it was really tame. I promise! I don’t want to spend any more time on those things because you can just go and read her blog for that. Besides, she’s much a much more entertaining read than me! Liam and I took a hike to Smith Rock while the girls played Ticket to Ride But… -
Discretion is the better part of Valor
14 Apr 2013 | 10:04 pmSome call me a wimp…I say I’m smart. Today I was supposed to run the Peterson Ridge Rumble 20 Miler in Sisters, OR. But instead I took my 2nd DNS (did not start) ever. The moment I took off my shoe last Saturday night, I knew my left foot was slightly injured. It was the same exact pain that I had after Forest Park in May 2011—half dollar size bruise on the top of my left foot, severe tenderness while walking, curling my toes, and flexing my calf…Toe extensor tendonitis has struck again. I tried to run 4 miles on Wednesday but the pain was too great and I ended up walking… -
Epic Adventure 2013.1–Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim
11 Apr 2013 | 8:04 amView from the top of the South Rim. I would be running all the way to the horizon and back. Back in January I heard that some of my friends were going to Arizona in April to run The Grand Canyon. I quickly told Pam that she couldn’t go (because she’s already done it) and jumped at the chance to experience one of ultrarunning’s greatest adventures—a double crossing of The Grand Canyon. Running from Rim to Rim to Rim (R2R2R) in one day with awesome company is pretty darn special and certainly fits into my plan for more “epic adventures in 2013.” As soon as I…

X-Amount of Time
17 May 2013 | 1:50 pmI couldn’t follow the dharma teacher’s guided meditation this morning to save my life. My monkey mind swung from thought to thought, and my body busted loose from every position I put it in, even though I was in the comfiest place in the world: my bed. I sat up and took out my iPod ear plugs and said, “What? What the hell do you want?” The answer I got was, “Live now, not later.” Don’t ask me where that came from because I don’t have a clue. I often wonder if it’s not my past lives coming through (all of whom had obvious issues with patience) saying, “Come on already! -
A Little Story About Mental Illness
9 May 2013 | 2:21 pmIt was 3 a.m. and my sister, mother and I were watching cartoons in a hospital waiting room, anxious for news about Dad, who’d had a heart attack. What began in my stomach as a churning crept upward to my heart, which began beating wildly. The feeling crept to my lungs, which couldn’t complete a full breath. It then crept into my mind, which began thinking, I’m dying, too. Within a few minutes I was on my own gurney and a doctor was handing me a pill. “You had a panic attack,” he said. “Here, put this under your tongue.” It was Halcion. Valium with a kick. Within seconds, I was… -
AIM: Through Thick and Thin
6 May 2013 | 4:30 amWriter Rex Harris describes yin-yang as “…a synthesis of mutually dependent polar forces. Each force exists only in relationship to its opposite, each is ‘completed’ by its opposite...” Take, for instance, a monarch caterpillar. It weighs 8 grams by the time it spins its cocoon. When it emerges as a butterfly, it weighs a mere half-gram. The caterpillar and the butterfly are opposite in composition and yet the same being, existing only because of its opposite. Caterpillars and butterflies have no understanding of their changing body structure. They just do what nature intends. We,… -
A 5-Year-Old’s Marathon…In Pictures
4 May 2013 | 11:54 amI was one proud Grammy this morning as I watched my granddaughter, Claire, complete the Pittsburgh Marathon’s Kids Of Steel program, in which she not only ran 26.2 miles over the course of the last two months, but she raised $2,505 for the Animal Rescue League of Pittsburgh. Claire ran 1 mile on 25 days and ran the final 1.2 miles with her dad, the day before the Pittsburgh Marathon, in which he and my daughter are going to run the half. (Daughter as in the one who had her fourth baby just two months ago. She rocks really hard!) Here’s what the morning looked like: We arrived downtown and… -
Best
1 May 2013 | 8:22 amI saw this sign in one of my favorite breakfast places last Saturday: It was a good reminder BEFORE I ordered breakfast, especially since I had a hankerin’ for something syrupy. My best wouldn’t have been to order the praline-stuffed French toast or the Indian pancake. My best was to order the egg white omelet with spinach, mushrooms, and smoked gouda. Nothing about smoked gouda would make me whine or complain that I didn’t have something with syrup. Booyah! I’ve been thinking a lot about what my best is, especially since posting my last blog about depression. Depression can take away…

This is Your Brain on Exercise
20 May 2013 | 5:00 amAccording to an article in The New York Times published last fall, a recent study indicates that brain power is improved by exercise. And the harder you work, the more your brain may benefit. The study, completed with mice, showed that those mice who were challenged with a more difficult “workout” (on a mini-treadmill) demonstrated significant cognitive improvements in comparison to the mice who were allowed to do their usual “workout” (on their running wheel). What does this mean for you and I? Well first, it means that if you’re doing moderate exercise on a… -
Eating to Stay Cool
20 May 2013 | 4:59 amNow that summer is almost here and the temperature is starting to rise, those heavy comfort foods that you crave during the fall and winter just aren’t cutting it. Who wants to turn on the oven when it’s 80 degrees outside? Eating well and staying cool isn’t impossible. There are plenty of healthy dinners that don’t involve the oven, or even the stove top. Fire up that grill. Grilling is one of the healthiest ways to cook meat and can give vegetables (and even fruit) a flavorful twist. You’ll keep the heat outside and dinner will be ready in no time. Give those… -
Measles, Mumps, and…Diabetes?
13 May 2013 | 5:00 amThe medical community is always looking for ways to prevent diseases, and that often means researching vaccines. We’re used to hearing about vaccines for contagious diseases like HIV, the flu, chicken pox and measles, but newer vaccines are targeting diseases like cancer and diabetes. There are several diabetes vaccines being developed and tested and it’s likely one or more will be available in just a few years. While most of the vaccines in development now are for Type 1 diabetes, there is also hope for the creation of a Type 2 vaccine. Considering that diabetes of either type… -
Mental Health Month – Recognize Signs of Depression
6 May 2013 | 4:47 amMay is Mental Health Month, and there’s no better time than now to pay close attention to your mental health. With the economy in a major slump, an unemployment rate that just keeps rising, and homes going into foreclosure in almost every neighborhood, it’s no surprise that more and more people are reporting stress, anxiety and depression symptoms these days. While everyone gets sad or “blue” sometimes, when these emotions become so intense that they rule your days and nights, last weeks or months at a time, negatively affect your ability to do day-to-day tasks, or… -
Happiness is Medicine for the Heart
29 Apr 2013 | 5:00 amAccording to a recent study published in the European Heart Journal, happier people may have healthier hearts. The study indicated that people who reported being generally happy and content were less likely to develop heart disease. In fact, it seemed that as a person’s level of happiness increased, their risk to develop heart disease decreased. It isn’t clear exactly the reason why happier people may have healthier hearts, but adding a little happiness to your life certainly couldn’t hurt. To improve your overall happiness and help your heart, try some of these strategies:…

3 Ways to Deeply Stretch Your Hips in Butterfly
20 May 2013 | 3:03 pmIf you suffer from tight hips, it doesn't just affect your hips and hip flexors. The tightness radiates up into your spine and into the thighs, which can cause soreness and pain when exercising or even when sitting or standing. Runners, cyclists, and desk-bound folks commonly complain of tight hips that cause lower back pain, and stretching this area is one way to alleviate tightness. Butterfly Pose is one of the most effective stretches you can do, and if you've done this pose a million times, try these variations to get an even deeper stretch. Begin with five breaths in regular Butterfly,… -
3 Ways to Boost Your Workout With Caffeine
20 May 2013 | 2:10 pmIf your workout needs a little boost, having caffeine before you exercise can be just what you need. Studies have shown that ingesting caffeine before a workout increases your endurance, can help ease postexercise muscle soreness, and can help sedentary people exercise more vigorously. While caffeinated gels, drinks, and chews help give a much-needed boost during endurance races, you should play it safe when it comes to your caffeinated workout. Stay away from energy drinks, and opt for naturally caffeinated options with these tips. Have a shot: An espresso shot before a workout is… -

Coca-Cola Never Ever Markets to Kids and Is Part of Obesity Solution iPhone Edition
16 May 2013 | 2:30 amSo yesterday I downloaded Santa's Helper - an iPhone game produced by Coca-Cola. Apple's app folks determined it was for users aged 4+ (see that little symbol I circled in the top right corner) And you should know too that Apple also has a 12+ designation which according to their guidance system means,"Applications in this category may also contain infrequent mild language, frequent or intense cartoon, fantasy or realistic violence, and mild or infrequent mature or suggestive themes, and simulated gambling which may not be suitable for children under the age of 12."And while I realize there's… -

15 May 2013 | 2:30 amThanks to fellow physician Dr. Tony Almazan from Dayton, Ohio for letting me know about how Tourism Ohio has partnered up with McDonald's and Coca-Cola to help promote visiting one of America's heaviest States. And what a partnership it is! Not only does the partnership steer people to visit McDonald's, but it also steers them explicitly to a large beverage from Coca-Cola whereby consumers who buy a large Coke (not small or medium Cokes) at McDonald's can trade the cup it came in for discounts at various Ohio tourist destinations.Brilliant! And clearly a salient example of just how important… -

A Florida surgeon and fitness freak with a black belt in karate, he runs 50 miles a week and flies a Cherokee Arrow 200. Stevia: The Other White Sweetener
19 May 2013 | 4:06 pmDuring your weekly shopping trip, you see a food sample booth just ahead of you. Curious what they have to try, you make your way over. Oooh, coffee! With how little sleep you got last night, that sounds great. So, you pour yourself a small cup and as you are about to grab the sugar, you notice a small bottle of stevia extract next to it. You’re a sugar person, but should you give it a try? You’ve heard that stevia is a natural sweetener that has been used for centuries in South America and extensively for over 30 years in Japan. You’re curious enough to try it, but is it a… -
Sprint Away That Weight!
14 May 2013 | 8:39 pmSummer is just around the corner and many of you are looking forward to heading to the local beach in your new bathing suit. However, when some of you look in the full length mirror, you might be disappointed by the way your bathing suit looks on you. It’s an all too common scenario. Too many holiday treats and indulgences. Sometimes even a few extra pounds can make a huge difference, if it all goes to your midsection. Those extra pounds can make the new bathing suit that you bought online, using your old size, look anything but flattering. Frustrated with your situation, you might… -
Throw Out That Peeler!
10 May 2013 | 7:27 pmMy grandfather was very fond for apples. Every afternoon, around 2pm, he would take an apple out of his bag, and start peeling it with his knife before cutting it into pieces to share with us. I have fond memories of those times. Not until later in life, did I realize that the peel that my grandfather so painstakingly removed from our apples was actually edible and had nutritional value. Many of us grew up seeing our parents and/or grandparents peeling potatoes, carrots and other produce and we didn’t think anything of it. It was just the way we were brought up. So, when we became… -
Farmers Market: Worth Your Time
9 May 2013 | 7:23 pmMary’s life was very busy. Not only did she have to work full time, she was also a single mom with two young boys. However, despite her busy schedule, Mary always made a concerted effort to make healthy choices for her family, such as buying organic food at the grocery store and cooking healthy meals for her kids. Eat Organic: It’s Worth The Cost!
1 May 2013 | 8:49 pmYou promised your doctor and your family that this was the year that you were going to make a “real effort” to become healthier. For you, that meant less fast food, cooking more nutritious meals and maintaining an exercise routine. However, on your last trip to the local supermarket, you weren’t sure if you should buy organic. You had heard in the news that both organic and conventionally grown foods provided comparable nutrients. However, you also heard that organic foods are grown and produced in a more traditional/natural way with no chemical fertilizers, synthetic…

Are big bloggers cliquey?
20 May 2013 | 1:03 amour tribe. The title of this post is “stolen” from an email I received. When I read the subject line (Big bloggers are so cliquey!) it took me a moment to realize the sender did not mean STATURE but perceived reach. Apparently Im slow that way. But I digress. Essentially the message asked if, when I started blogging, “big bloggers” (I still envisioned highlymuscled post-writing machines) had been exclusive & cliquey. If they left newer bloggers to fend for themselves as they do now. Later this same day I received emails asking if Id be at Fitbloggin (yes… -

Receiving Weight Loss Support from a Spouse
3 May 2013 | 10:30 amThankfully, my wife supported me as I was losing weight. Shortly after I started losing weight in 2009, my wife gave birth to our daughter, our first child. Even through the turmoil and life change that a new/first baby can bring, I had permission to go to the gym whenever — and however long — I liked. As I eluded to yesterday, many other husbands/wives I hear from don’t have that luxury. Unfortunately, I hear about a lot of bitterness and resentment. In addition to being able to head to the gym carte blanche, my wife was also there to encourage me as the weight flew off… -
Lack of Weight Loss Support from a Spouse
2 May 2013 | 6:15 amLosing weight can come with unintended consequences. While the pros of losing weight greatly outweigh the cons, there can definitely be some cons. Let me pitch a completely hypothetical, yet common scenario to you. Holly marries David. When they marry, both are slightly overweight, enjoy the same gamut of sedentary of activities, and neither care about the amount or quality of the food they eat. Waistlines are of no concern to either of them. Let’s fast forward a few years into the marriage. Holly decides to lose weight. She starts counting calories in an effort to lose 40 pounds. She… -
Hearty Breakfast Under 500 Calories
24 Apr 2013 | 5:31 amI’m not a fan of your typical diet food. This biscuit, scrambled (3 whole) eggs, and two pieces of bacon are 480 calories. Most mornings my wife and daughter get a hot meal. Breakfast usually varies between a mix of pancakes, french toast, eggs, biscuits, waffles, sausage, and bacon. By the way, don’t listen to my wife — bacon tastes better than sausage. My day always starts off better when I have a big, hearty breakfast. I have more energy and I feel full for hours. When I was 344 pounds, I rarely ate breakfast and if I did it was usually cereal or fast food. I’d feel…

15 May 2013 | 10:55 pmAs you might have noticed, I haven’t been blogging much lately. A few of you have texted/messaged/emailed/wroteonGOMI about it. Thanks for the concern. I know when I’ve read bloggers that dropped away it always worried me, so I appreciate that from all of you. Sorry for disappearing y’all! To be honest there are a few reasons I’ve been gone: not much to write about, been busy, focused on other things, time is limited and working on things that aren’t meant for this blog. Since I’ve let you into my lives for the last few years I feel like I owe you… -
April Foodie Penpal!
30 Apr 2013 | 8:38 pmYo. Remember that schedule for this week? I’m sticking to it. Tonight was Zumba. It was amazing. Post zumba happies are the best. :) This month I decided to participate in Foodie Penpals and today is the reveal. I have to say, this month it was a treat to get a box of goodies! The penpal who sent me the box of awesome food was April from East, TN. She sent along a wonderful list explaining all the ingredients in the box – I should totally do this myself next time! Let’s look at what I got, right? I’ll start with what I’ve already eaten… Lindt hazelnut… -
Put It On The Calendar
28 Apr 2013 | 10:03 pmDespite starting my DietBet this week I haven’t worked out AT ALL. It’s been a crazy week for me and I could have benefitted from some hard workouts but it slipped through the cracks. I really want to go burn off some energy though so I’ve already scheduled some workouts for next week: I haven’t done group exercise classes in so long, which is a shame, because I love them. I’m going to try to pick up my two favorites: Zumba and Kickboxing. It will be like getting in touch with my exercise soul! Time to kick and shake it off! -
3…2…1… DietBet!
23 Apr 2013 | 8:39 amThe DietBet challenge I started starts tomorrow. You can still sign up and weigh in today (DO IT) and I think even join up to 2 weeks late. It’s a $25 bet and you try to lose 4% of your weight in one month. It’s totally motivational. Join us! I enjoyed my birthday so much yesterday. It was awesome to eat some cake, go out with friends for drinks, and just enjoy the day. Now that I had my birthday celebration it’s time to get serious, which is where the DietBet comes in. I weighed in this morning… And I submitted my official weigh in at 199.4 lbs. My goal at the end… -
27
21 Apr 2013 | 8:15 pmI turned 27 today!! Oh my goodness. I’ve been blogging for so long. I still remember writing about how I was 23 on this blog. So many things have happened and changed since then. My life has gone through a ton of transformations and changes and it continues to do so. I usually have pretty bad birthdays on odd years, but I always have amazing years. This has been the case for as long as I can remember. I’m not sure why this is. My birthday always sucks but I then have a badass year. I figure this will continue so this year is going to be GREAT. I’m so excited about the things…

Myths and Facts about Chocolate
10 May 2013 | 3:27 amWhen majority of us hear the word Chocolate, we imagine a bar, a box of candy and so on. In candy making, chocolate is next only to sugar in significance and incidence of [...] -

Make One Decision to Lose Weight
20 May 2013 | 4:01 amCommitment to lose weight | Decision to Lose Weight Have you tried to lose weight in the past? Has your commitment to lose weight in the past been a little light? If you want to lose weight and keep it off you have to make the decision to lose weight. However, more importantly you have to make the decision once, and once only to lose weight. Making the decision once means. Having a total commitment to dropping weight means you will do it. There is no try. It means obstacles may slow you down, but they will not stop you. It means failure is not an option. It means having a strong motivation… -
Are You Ready To Lose Weight? Let’s Get Going.
17 May 2013 | 4:36 amReady to Lose Weight A lot of people tell me that they are ready to lose weight. I thought it was more important that I was more action than… -
Did You Know This About Your Weight?
15 May 2013 | 4:07 amDid You Know This About Your Weight? Did you know… That just about everyone can lose weight if they choose to. That you increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke if you are overweight. That losing weight is not as hard, as most people want to make it. That having a heart attack will take more of your time than exercising will. That having knee problems because of your weight is more painful than not having seconds at dinner. That losing weight is about balance. That just talking about losing weight does not make it happen. That walking to the pantry does not burn off eating a bag of… -
Don’t Set Yourself Up For Weight Loss Failure
13 May 2013 | 3:09 amWeight Loss Failure | Weight Loss Balance People go on and off diets all the time. The problem is that diets just don’t work. If you want to lose weight, you need to be fully committed to the task. However, a total shock to your habits usually leads to weight loss failure. Giving up your favorite foods will torture you to the point that you will go on a binge. When I first decided to lose weight, I went from one extreme to the other. After a few days of driving myself crazy, I decided I needed to do something different. Although I was losing weight, I knew I would not be able to do what I… -
We Don’t Have to Starve to Lose Weight
10 May 2013 | 4:12 amDon’t Have to Starve to Lose Weight Many people have a lot of misconceptions about weight loss. One of the misconceptions is that we have to starve ourselves to lose weight. This is not accurate. We need to lower our calorie intake, but that does not mean starvation. We need to eat healthier foods that have lower calories. That does not mean starving ourselves. We have to exercise more, but we don’t have to starve ourselves. Losing weight is about balance not starvation. It is about balancing the foods we love in proper portions with healthy low calorie foods, so that we can lose…

Signs of Summer
20 May 2013 | 8:36 amWell, that was a short weekend, wasn’t it? Funny how that works out. After a cooler than normal spring, Memphis is seeing its first glimpses of summer. We went from jacket weather on Friday to shorts and flip flops on Saturday. The hair on the nape of my neck is damp by noon and stays damp until…October. That’s the surest sign of summer that i know! Other observed signs of summer: Honeysuckle! Along with roses and fresh-cut watermelon, I can’t think of another scent that so represents summertime. Whenever I see a honeysuckle vine, I’m instantly transported 30 40… -
Special Report: Neighborhood Dessert Social
17 May 2013 | 7:03 amBusy, busy week, but I’m thinking/hoping the pace should start slowing down now. One thing that kind of slipped up on me was the annual Neighborhood Dessert Social, which was held last night. As y’all know, I usually spend way too much some time contemplating my offering, but I had to come up with something in a hurry this year. Thanks to a big sale at Kroger, I have an abundance of cottage cheese (10/$10) in the fridge, so obviously I chose to make cookies: Okay, maybe not the obvious choice, but I needed to go with what I had on hand. I knew I wanted to make something bite-sized… -

I Ate Zucchini and Survived
10 May 2013 | 4:51 amI love when a Friday rolls around and I feel really good about the week behind me. Meal Logging My re-entry into normal Cammy living, brought to us courtesy of Sparkpeople: Not perfect, and not exactly balanced out right for the components, but the overall trend was good. I’ll take it and keep going. For week two, I’m going to work on getting protein and fiber up and carbs down a little. I’m also hoping to get my average exercise minutes up a bit. I’ll be working quite a bit next week, plus I’m transitioning into the second phase of New Rules of Lifting for Life,… -
Notes from My Kitchen
8 May 2013 | 4:12 amWarning: I’ve been cooking again. But nothing too strenuous. Apple Cinnamon Muffins I had a container of Chobani Apple Cinnamon yogurt on the verge of expiration, but I wasn’t feeling like waffles. What I wanted was cupcakes, only it will be another month or so before one of those shows up on my menu. So I compromised and made muffins. The recipe I used is from Peanut Butter and Peppers (link to recipe), and I mostly followed it as published. My only significant changes were to use 1/4 cup of stevia/sugar blend in place of the 1/2 cup of sugar in the original and to omit the…

18 May 2013 | 2:14 pmWe love fierce women in Mamavation, and one way that women of all ages can feel empowered is through learning self defense. This week we have a couple on the show who have experience teaching women self defense and have even had a show on PBS explaining how a woman can defend herself without punching or kicking. Known as the “Sonny and Cher” of Self Defense, this power couple had been all over the media sharing their message of empowerment with women, and now they’re with us on Mamavation TV! Special Guests: Tracy and Charley Vega In Mamavation we have our own power couple… -

And I can use your help. Please Sign This Petition Join me in petitioning Similac to remove genetically modified organisms (GMOs) from their infant formula during an online rally Wednesday, May 22nd from 8-9:30pm EST (5-6:30pm PST). Similac Stop Feeding Babies GMOs Petition
17 May 2013 | 10:26 amMoms CAN make a difference, but sometimes our looks can be deceiving. Some of us may live in yoga pants, while others confess to wearing baby food. We wipe noses, kiss boo boos, and comfort the defenseless. Another thing that is true of us is we protect our little ones….even if they aren’t our own. But most of all, we are powerful. And I’m going to prove it to you. Sign This Petition Last week Abbott Labratories, the makers of Similac Infant Formula, had a shareholders meeting and voted down removing GMOs from their infant formula. And thus abandoning babies. *jaw drops to… -
Just do it!
16 May 2013 | 3:22 amSo before I get into talking about What you should “Just do” let me start with the nitty gritty here. This week I lost .04 for a total of -4.6 since applying. Of course I would love to loose weight an ass cheek at a time, but certain people (Leah and Mark) keep telling me this is the healhty way to do it. Blah blah blah. Just kidding. I know that in reality this is a life style change not a crash diet so I am happy with that. Below is the standard feet on the scale pic and weight chart for you. I seriously need a pedi-you all must be sick of my blue polish by now! Date Weight… -

During the time I have been engaged in the boot camp, you might say my family has been just as engaged! The workouts and diet changes are more than just a passing phase, but a lifestyle change. In order to be successful, everyone in the house will have to make some changes too. Really, it’s been a positive change here. We are eating better food, being more active, and just feeling better in general! Also, not spending money of junk food or fast food, has allowed us…

Superfood Triple Berry Chia Pudding
15 May 2013 | 11:00 amI LOVE chia pudding! And what can be easier than throwing a few chia seeds into a mason jar with some fresh fruit and almond milk and giving it a good shake! Side note: please excuse the manicure. If you've never tried chia pudding, I highly recommend picking up some chia seeds and Blue Diamond Almond Breeze almond milk and give it a try. Chia is a super food; an excellent source of omega fatty acids, has more antioxidants than blueberries and it's full of minerals, calcium, protein, vitamins and fiber. Plus it is low in calories and is incredibly satiating. Some of you may have… -
Orange and Arugula Salad with Red Onion and Gorgonzola
14 May 2013 | 7:06 amSomething about Spring and the warmer weather that puts me in such a GREAT mood. It also makes me crave more salads, and this simple salad is a favorite of mine, I make this all the time for myself. I love the combination of the sweet, juicy oranges mixed with the peppery arugula and the pungent taste of the creamy Gorgonzola cheese, they work together harmoniously. My husband doesn't agree; he is not a fan of Gorgonzola at all so I usually make this for myself for lunch. If you want to make this for two or four, just multiply the ingredients. If you're like my husband and don't… -
Summer Pasta Salad with Baby Greens
13 May 2013 | 7:13 amI love making this mayo-less pasta salad with arugula, spinach, sun dried tomatoes, capers, fresh shaved Parmesan cheese and a splash of balsamic and oil. It's great for lunch or dinner, and has a healthy serving of baby greens. In the summer, when tomatoes are at their sweetest, I replace the sun dried tomatoes with fresh tomatoes from my garden. I usually have this for dinner on those warmer nights when I want a meatless meal or just something light, and because it has pasta in it, I feel full and satisfied after I eat it. The portions are pretty large for under 200 calories (only 5 WW… -
Skinny Chicken Fajitas
9 May 2013 | 7:54 amLean strips of chicken breast, bell peppers and onions served sizzling hot with warm tortillas and shredded cheese. If this is your idea of delicious, you are not alone! My husband Tommy is a creature of habit; anytime we go out for Mexican he always orders chicken fajitas. In fact when we went to Mexico a few years ago, he may have ordered them almost every night! I find that amusing because I get really bored of eating the same thing twice, and tend to always take a chance and try something completely new to me. But chicken fajitas are a regular in my home, we make them at least once a… -
Lemon Asparagus Couscous Salad with Tomatoes
7 May 2013 | 9:06 amPearl couscous (otherwise known as Isreali couscous) tossed with asparagus, tomatoes and lemon juice make a vibrant Spring pasta salad that is perfect for lunch, as a side dish, or even to make as a side dish if you are grilling for Mother's Day this weekend! I'm not usually a fan of the taste of whole wheat pasta, but I don't mind it when the pasta is a smaller cut like orzo, angel hair and pearl couscous. Yes, for those of you who've never tried pearl couscous, it's basically pasta and I treat as such. I don't follow the directions on the box, instead I boil it in a…

On one hand, an angry outburst can be a stress release, better [...] -

Chris Christie’s Weight-Loss Surgery: Part of a Larger Plan?
10 May 2013 | 7:36 amNew Jersey governor Chris Christie’s sharp tongue has earned him a good deal of press over the years. Now his stomach is making headlines as reports that he underwent weight-loss surgery last February flooded the web this week. At 350 pounds, Christie has never been able to hide his weight problem. Some observers wondered if it kept him from making a presidential run in 2012. In light of this recent news, more than a few pundits are speculating that Christie may be trying trim down for a White House bid in 2016. Due to his busy schedule, Christie opted for gastric band surgery (also… -
The unfair way the food industry gets you addicted and how you can beat them at their game
26 Apr 2013 | 12:39 pmIt’s probably no surprise that your body and mind respond to food in very specific ways. Anyone who has fought the urge for a second handful of chips or a third cookie knows this very well. Researchers are beginning to understand more about the qualities within food that make it so alluring and even addictive. And those in the processed food industry are keeping up with them at every step. Any visit to a grocery store or any few minutes of television commercials can drive home the tremendous effort that goes into marketing the foods that pass through drive-up windows and get tossed into… -
Low-Cal Cheesy Frittata
18 Apr 2013 | 1:14 pmI’m always on a quest to find healthy recipes for ordinarily unhealthy meals. It’s definitely a challenge, especially for a carb and cheese lover like me. I found an awesome recipe for a frittata that is low in fat and calories, but high in ooey gooey cheeses. This recipe also incorporates lots of fresh veggies—adding great flavor and nutrients. 1 tsp. I can’t believe its not butter 1/4 c. minced onions 1/4 c. minced red bell peppers 1/4 c. minced zucchini 1 grape tomato, diced 1/2 tsp. chopped fresh basil, or 1/2 tsp dried basil pinch black pepper 1/4 c. egg substitute… -
Low-Fat Baked Dijon Chicken
1 Apr 2013 | 12:57 pmWhen you’re short on time and need a filling meal, you may think that the only easy fix is to run to a drive-thru or pop a frozen meal into the microwave. However, there are many easier and healthier ways to have a good meal when you’re in a hurry. Take this Low-Fat Baked Dijon Chicken recipe for example. From prep to plate, this dish only takes about 20 minutes to make. The mustard spread adds tons of sweet and tangy flavor without adding tons of fat and calories. And because chicken is rich in protein, this meal is sure to fill you up. 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts or… -
Your bariatric journey: The excess skin issue
28 Mar 2013 | 8:41 amThere’s no way to know whether excess skin will be an issue for a bariatric surgery patient, but it’s certainly something a lot of our patients ask about. “If you’re losing a significant amount of weight, loose skin is one of the issues you may experience,” said Linda Rodriguez, certified nurse practitioner with St.Vincent Bariatric Center of Excellence. “The older we are, the less elastic our skin is, and someone who is a smoker will also have less skin elasticity. The amount of weight loss, in addition to those factors, will influence the amount of loose skin bariatric patients…

7 May 2013 | 5:40 am“I bargained with Life for a penny, And Life would pay no more no matter how much I begged in the evening, When I counted my scanty store. For Life is a just an employer, It gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial’s hire, Only to learn, dismayed, That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have willingly paid.” It’s true. Life will give us just about anything we ask of it. Sometimes we just don’t ask. We settle even though we actually do have a vision. But do you… -
Tools of the Trade That I Wouldn’t Trade….by Chef Isabella
5 Apr 2013 | 11:04 amThe million dollar question: How many kitchen gadgets, tools and appliances does one really need? Some people collect kitchen gadgets; others can get by with a paring knife, a spatula and a frying pan. No one’s judging because there really is no right or wrong nor rhyme or reason. Friends are surprised when they come into my kitchen. I’m a professional chef but my kitchen is not as well-equipped as some people might think. I don’t have all the gadgets and tools that make every single job easier and I certainly don’t have all of the latest appliances in the season’s hottest colors. -
Cleaning Out Your Fridge Shouldn’t be Just a Spring Thing!
12 Mar 2013 | 9:44 amA refrigerator can say a lot about a person. (No, it’s not dorm size!) I… -
Nixing the Proverbial Tomorrow
4 Mar 2013 | 9:06 amSo many of us are “on the go.” I’m not talking about weekend getaways or running back and forth between work/school, home and daily responsibilities, I’m thinking more along the lines of: “I’m going to go back to Weight Watchers next week,” “I’ll shop for healthier foods the next trip I make to the store,” or “I’m going to get back to waking up earlier so I have time to exercise.” Don’t get me wrong, it’s perfectly fine for us to say we’re going to do something and assigning a start date to it. What we can’t do is say we’re going to do something and… -

Coming to a decision.
27 Apr 2013 | 12:16 pmI've spent a lot of time thinking about this. It was not a decision that came easily, but I know that this is what needs to happen. The blog Leaving Fatville will be coming to a close. The healthy living community on twitter and the blogosphere was the light at the end of a very dark tunnel for me three years ago. It helped me remember who I was as a person, taught me that I'm worth taking care of and that no guilt should ever be felt for taking care of myself. It was the support I needed to lose over 60 pounds. It was where I found friends all across the nation that I can't imagine not… -
HFCS, part two.
27 Apr 2013 | 11:46 amI've tried to sit long enough to write the rest of this series and each time I can't finish. There's no way to write it that doesn't set my son up to find this in the future. I can't write this without showing the world the deepest and darkest part of my son's behavior. This could haunt him because of me. The Internet doesn't forget. And I can't forgive myself if I'm writing a post that causes him pain and embarrassment in the future. While the details will remain in the family, the results we came to will not. I have no doubt in my mind that HFCS is the cause of his extreme behavior. I have… -
How HFCS changed our house, part 1.
27 Mar 2013 | 5:44 amI've gone back and forth on writing this. Part of me wants to scream it from the hilltops, and the other part wants to shelter my son from ever finding this on the internet. I don't use his full name, but any amount of googling could probably put two and two together. The desire to protect other kids and parents won out, so you'll be hearing his and my story. It's not a short story, and I want to make sure you all get the whole thing. Work Out, Avoid Breast Cancer
9 May 2013 | 12:00 amIt is intuitively obvious that sensible exercise is good for us. If nothing else, it makes that afternoon snack easier to rationalize. New research has just been published that shows that a moderate exercise regimen can dramatically reduce the risk of breast cancer. Researchers at the University of Minnesota were interested in the relationship between exercise and the metabolism of estrogen. Estrogen is a hormone that, in addition to other benefits, seems to play a role in reducing breast cancer risk. The study involved nearly 400 sedentary (but healthy) women, divided into two groups. -

Should Strong be the New Skinny?

It’s called “This Trendy ‘Strong is the New Skinny’ Thing and what is could mean for the next generation of girls,” and this paragraph could not describe me and mentality at the moment, any better: “Now when I look in the mirror (this is embarrassing by the way, I can’t believe I’m admitting this online) I flex instead of sucking in. Kiyonna 50% Off Sale
18 May 2013 | 5:43 amI don’t post lots of sale things often, but sometimes there are deals too good to pass up, as is the case with this sale going on from Kiyonna. One of the comments I get when I post some outfits is that the items are too expensive for someone’s budget. I completely get that: By no means do I have an unlimited clothing budget (can you imagine?!). So when there are sales like this on clothes that I love, I snap them up. Kiyonna is one of my favorite designers because they focus on fit and fabric. They really flatter curves, and I really appreciate they have sizes 10-32. Kiyonna is… -
Do the (Invisible) Work
16 May 2013 | 9:16 pmTo lose weight, you just need to eat right and exercise. Am I right? Of course I’m not. We look at that and think it’s so easy, when in fact it’s really difficult. So many variables come into play. On blogs and social media, we broadcast the good. There are food photos, sweaty face photos, and inspirational quotes. I’m a prime example of this. I like to celebrate those good things because let’s face it: they don’t happen all the time. Could you imagine if we all “life-casted” the good, the bad and the ugly of every day? “Look at this… -

I noticed they had a knit sweater that looked so easy, comfortable, and airy. I hadn’t seen any plus items like this before. It looked like a fine knit casual sweater from the beaches of California (I’m looking at you, C&C California – I’ve wanted you do to plus for so long), and I knew I had to try it to see if it was anything like I imagined from a comfort perspective. Glitter and Unicorns
12 May 2013 | 7:59 pmThings aren’t always filled with glitter and unicorns. Yet sometimes I think we all have tendencies to pretend that our lives exist in this perfect snow globe of hope and idealism. I posted an outfit photo over on my Facebook page and someone commented how great I look in everything. I quickly reminded her that this isn’t the case: I only show the things that I want to be seen. There are lots of awkward lumpy dumpy photos that have never seen the light of day because really, I don’t want to use those to represent my fashion sense. It’s just not…

15 May 2013 | 4:18 pmTrue story… My friend Kristen and I were down at her parents house in Florida on spring break a few years back. Her parents have a variety of “adult beverages” in the house. One night, we were sitting around after dinner and her mom gets us to try this new thing called a “Skinny Girl Margarita ” We are both optimistic because of the low calories so we try it. Holy disgusting. It was so bad that when her mom wasn’t looking, we poured our drinks into the plant that was on table (sorry, Nana). Her mom thought we drank it but was surprised how well… -

I feel totally locked in
20 May 2013 | 6:33 amDriving home from the grocery store last night, I thought to myself “I am totally locked in.” I was sipping on a bottle of Propel that I just purchased, and thinking about all the good decisions I made this weekend. I took advantage of the fantastic weather and walked outside four times last week, logging nearly 12 miles. I did a little “functional fitness” Sunday afternoon and my husband and I washed our cars in the driveway, old-school with buckets and hoses. Locked in. Fridays are our night to dine out, and we went to Chipotle. I got the burrito bowl with chicken but unlike most… -
Friday weigh-ins for the win
17 May 2013 | 9:18 amWhen I told the Weight Shrink that I was changing my weigh-in day from Mondays to Fridays, she pooh-pooed it as me making another excuse for bad results on the scale. But I know my body and I had a feeling that Mondays were a bad idea, given all the "celebratory sodium" over the weekend. So today, after I got back from my walk (my fourth one this week, adding up to 11.7 miles), I stepped on the scale and reached that number you see above you. That number is significant because in the past, when I'd ramp up my exercise, my hunger would also ramp up, and also my weight. This week was different… -

Wordless Wednesday: Growing wild on my walk
15 May 2013 | 8:49 amTook my phone with me on one of my walks Monday to document the beautiful things that grow along the way. Believe it or not three of these plants are "lawn weeds." Another Reason Why Eating Red Meat Could Give You Heart Disease
9 Apr 2013 | 12:36 amA new study led by Dr. Stanley Hazen from the Cleveland Clinic had some really fascinating findings. Researchers have long thought that it’s not really saturated fat or cholesterol from red meats that increases the risk of heart disease. The researchers thought that increased heart disease risk from eating meats might be caused by a chemical that is produced by bacteria in your gut from digesting red meat. This almost unknown chemical is then converted by your liver into another chemical called TMAO that then travels through your blood, increasing your risk of heart disease. Follow-up… -

2 Week Recap
20 May 2013 | 7:20 pmWent on a little Hiatus. I took a little hiatus from blogging but not from fitness, nutrition and life. The good news is I'm done with the 5 weeks of real estate classes. I needed to get through those classes in order to qualify to take the state exam to become a real estate agent. I still have lots of studying to do for the state exam but it won't be nearly as time consuming as the classes were. With all the classes, studying and reading I still had time to get some exercise in (but not as nearly as much as I wanted).Got a Personal Best!! A couple Saturdays ago I ran a 5k in… -

Matter of fact today I signed up for two races. First one is this Saturday in my hometown of Rochester called the Hometown Hustle. It's a pretty standard 5k but I haven't ran one since the Super 5k in February so I'm excited. The next one I signed up for is in June and it's a bigger deal for me....Ok it's not what you think.... I'm not running in the marathon but I am participating in the… -

24 Apr 2013 | 7:43 pmMaking A Decision And Sticking With It! With the Tough Mudder 67 days away I've been struggling with the path I should be taking. I need to keep gaining upper body strength, and I need to keep losing weight. Am I losing too much weight and that's hurting my upper body strength? Many studies have been conducted to explain exactly why this is; and it all seems to point to the diet as the primary reason for their longevity and exceptional health. Why is Gluten Bad For You?
6 May 2013 | 4:23 pmWe’ve already mentioned wheat and why it should be avoided. If you rack your brain, you’ll recall the number one reason we advise against wheat is gluten. What is gluten and why is it bad for you? Broken down into laymen terms, gluten is a stretchy protein found in many types of grains. Its usefulness has gone beyond consumption purposes, and can now be found in everything from lip balm to play dough. Because the health benefits of grain have been indoctrinated in us since before we could walk, many people are quite shocked to hear the other side of the story. So is gluten really bad… -

Gluten Free Dining After a Museum Show: It's the Last Weekend to See the Striking Seattle Art Museum (SAM) show: "Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London."
19 May 2013 | 6:18 amCreative Commons image credit, below. When one is in the presence of great art, the luminosity of the pieces allows the humanity of the creator, of the subjects, to jump off the canvas, across the centuries. Such is the magic of the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) SAM show, ending May 19, 2013. Meandering through museums and absorbing great works of art inspires and energizes but also can make one just plain hungry. That's where the SAM cafe, TASTE, comes in. When I visited after the museum closed, the cafe was packed, and a tour group was making merry in a large back room. But… -

Why owning a coffee grinder is a handy-dandy idea if you're making your own gluten free bread.
27 Feb 2013 | 3:49 amCreative Commons photo credit, below. Making gluten free bread is an exercise in creativity -- all those mysterious yet exciting flours that were completely unknown to many of us even five years ago: millet, sorghum, garbanzo, amaranth, quinoa, tapioca -- even split pea. Yet combining them all to arrive at a delectable gluten free bread that has actually risen (as in, the yeast has not burned through the sugar too early, the loaf is almost grazing the lid of the bread machine) is no mean feat.In what I have termed "Gluten Free 2.0," the "meatier" flours, such as garbanzo, quinoa,… -
Does your Academy Awards party offer gluten free goodies?
24 Feb 2013 | 5:54 pmCreative Commons photo credit, below. Oscars parties are pure fun! As the Oscars happen right over the dinner hour, the parties always involve food! At the last Oscars party I attended I found plenty on which to nibble; but, this year, Oscar party options serving gluten free food seem to be a little scant. One museum offered sandwiches, and that was all. I emailed them, and they responded very kindly. The community affairs rep let me know that a member of her family has celiac, and said that at future events the museum would consider having options for those with special dietary…

And without a doubt, the morning is the best time to give your body a boost. One of the key strategies to staying toned and ripped is to keep your metabolism elevated throughout the day. Letting your metabolism slow down too much, or for too long, causes your body to stop burning off calories and start storing them as fat. This is the reason that many dietitians and personal trainers recommend eating 6 smaller meals during the day. By constantly putting fuel into your…

“It’s only 5 pounds….” Don’t Minimize Your Weight Loss Accomplishments!
20 May 2013 | 10:12 amIn weight loss, it is regrettably easy to get caught up on the numbers. I’ve talked about this before in my post about pounds and inches here. One of the most unfortunate things about focusing on numbers, is how easy it is to minimize your weight loss accomplishments. “It’s only 5 pounds…” When put that way, 5 pounds seems like it can be dismissed as trivial. It could not be further from the truth! Every pound lost is a “win” for your body and health. You likely changed your daily life and put significant effort into losing those 5 pounds, so always… -
Beware of Low Fat Products
13 May 2013 | 2:56 pmBeware of low fat The grocery store is full of low fat products which are proudly displayed with different colored labels or little heart symbols. It sounds like low fat would be a good thing, so why did I title this article “beware of low fat products”? The problem is that when you take fat out of a food, flavor and calories also go with it. To make up for this, food manufacturers compensate by cranking up the sugar, salt, and carbohydrates! Low fat versions of products may have a few less calories than their “normal fat” counterparts, but the switch to higher… -
Eat Less Calories With The Upside Down Trick
24 Apr 2013 | 10:54 amEat less calories with the upside-down trick I can’t remember where or when I first heard of this upside-down trick, but I’ve been doing it myself ever since. How often do we add extra calories on to our foods just to add a little bit of extra taste? I can think of a lot of examples: butter on bread and rolls, peanut butter and/or jelly on morning toast, salsa or cheese on chips, mustard on a pretzel, peanut butter on celery and bananas, and so on and so on… A lot of those toppings are very calorie dense; typically from plenty of sugar. Not to mention most of the… -
Inches Or Pounds: Sometimes It Is One Or The Other
18 Apr 2013 | 11:00 amInches or Pounds? We have noticed something interesting while helping countless patients lose weight. From week to week, sometimes a patient will have a drop in pounds on the scale, sometimes a drop in inches from the waist, and sometimes it is both! I haven’t come across a definitive explanation for why this is so. A possible explanation is that the patients who tend to lose inches instead of pounds have also increased their activity levels and are, in fact, adding muscle mass at the same time they are burning fat. The relative weight of the added muscle off-sets the loss of fat. -
Easy Tip For Controlling Portion Sizes
26 Mar 2013 | 9:54 amTupperware plastic containers Americans have trouble controlling portion sizes. Everything is supersized in America. It’s expected that we “get our money’s worth” at a restaurant, and most often that means enormous portions. If I go out to a restaurant for a meal, I end up taking home half to two-thirds of what is served to me. I typically get another meal or two out of it over the next couple of days. (On a side note, I think my re-heating abilities are reaching gourmet levels!) But we also know that restaurants don’t have optimum nutrition in mind when…
